Event Overview by Katherine Allen: Celebrating library super powers at Internet Librarian International for SLA Europe

Thanks to Katherine who kindly offered to write this post; Katherine Allen is European Business Development Director for Information Today, which produces conferences including ILI, Taxonomy Boot Camp London and Streaming Forum, and publishes Streaming Media magazine and ILI365.

Internet Librarian International (OR) will take place at Olympia, London 17-18 October with workshops on 16 Oktober. SLA medlemmer drage fordel af en 25% discount on the full conference fee.

‘Celebrating librarian super powers’ is this year’s ILI theme. According to ILI co-chair Jan Holmquist, “the power of an international think tank of highly skilled librarians should never be underestimated”, and with this as our inspiration, the conference features almost sixty presentations and case studies from many different library and information settings, taking in Australia, Canada, Danmark, Italien, Spanien, Sverige, Switzerland and the USA as well as the UK.

Opening keynote speaker Kate Torney is Chief Executive of the State Library of Victoria – Australia’s oldest and busiest public library. Before joining the State Library, Kate was the Director of News at the Australian Broadcasting Corporate and was a broadcast journalist for more than 20 år, leading ABC News through a critical period of change in the global media sector. In her keynote, Kate will argue that the library sector offers a great example of successful transformation in an age of digital disruption — and the results are something to shout about.

ILI’s day 2 keynote speaker David White is Head of Technology Enhanced Learning at the University of the Arts. David’s talk ‘Expertise in an era of easy answers’ will explore the role libraries can play in countering the ‘think-less find-more’ mentality encouraged by the Web and the corresponding mistrust of ‘experts’

Each day, delegates can choose between three parallel tracks:

  • The new library, the new librarian
  • Users, UX, and usage
  • Content creativity
  • Fight the fake, find the facts
  • Marketing the library
  • New scholarly communications

Also new for 2017 is ‘ILI Extra’, an additional, more informal track which offers a choice of hour-long workshops on a wide range of topics, including personal development, game playing and takeaway tech tips.

Don’t forget!! SLA er berettiget til at kræve en 25% discount on fees for the main conference using code SLA25 when registering. Rabatter er også tilgængelige for flere delegerede fra samme organisation. Vi håber at se dig der!
